Bayern Munich are confident they can convince the 26-year-old to sign an extension to the deal that ends in 2012, but the World Cup star is seriously considering a move abroad.
Jose Mourinho wanted to take him to Real Madrid but had to settle for fellow Germany midfield stars Sami Khedira and Mesut Ozil.

Reports in Germany claimed that Mourinho told Schweinsteiger after a friendly in August: 'Next year you're mine.'
And now Khedira - who joined Madrid from Stuttgart in the summer - has revealed: 'Bastian has asked me about the workings of Real. We had already spoken before Mourinho's statement because we have a very good, open relationship.
'Bastian is one of the few players who would succeed anywhere. But I would never advise anyone. One person wants to go abroad and the next doesn't. Bayern are a very big, absolutely world-class club.'
