ALERT: Zynga’s Not Handing Out Farm Subsidies This Christmas

If you see a Facebook status update claiming that Zynga is giving away farm cash, trust us, it’s not true.

Thousands of Facebook status updates are being published on Facebook, saying this or some variation thereof:
Yiepppppeeeee… Zynga team gave me 300 Farm Cash worth 50$ absolutely free….yes FREE for Christmas celebration..I am sooooo damn happy today..! Take yours also it is limited off for FEW HOURS ONLY…go to their app… ^.^ -> [LINK ERASED]
In the last few minutes a more elaborate banner has been showing up as well:
Obviously, none of these are real, so don’t click on them! In fact, if you come across one of these fake applications that are trying to sell you stuff or share your information, report it to Facebook. Know that the only ways you can get Farm Cash to play Farmville are:
  1. purchase it in the application
  2. ask your your friends to buy it for you as a gift
  3. enter official contests through the official Zynga/Farmville forums
This is the way it has always been, and always will be. Have you seen these posts or know of anyone who clicked through the whole application?

Facebook Launches New Registration Sign Up Tool

Posted on December 16th, 2010 1:44 Pm

The registration plugin is simply a way to automatically generate a registration form and reduce friction during the sign up process. Ultimately all registration forms will have a Facebook-like design but will have much of the data pre-poulated. Most of what was announced this morning was something we previously covered, however there are a few things which we didn’t know about in our previous update.
Registration Form
Implementation of this feature still requires having a developer who knows a little bit of back-end programming. As described in the user registration documentation, the data entered by the form will be sent back as a signed request, with an oAuth token included. You can then enter all the data provided by the form into your back-end database, and continue moving the user through the flow, with the session essentially being generated by Facebook.
The key benefits here are two-fold: registration forms will be auto-populated and hence the sign up process will be quicker and all your users can now quickly login with Facebook while you still gain access to the user data. Rather than using any complex javascript authentication or old Facebook Connect code, you can get up and running quickly. You can view the full details here. One thing that would be interesting would be for Facebook to take this by the next level by handling all authentication issues and provide non-technical people with a simple back-end for managing their users. I’m sure that’s much further down the road.

5 Ways To Improve Your Nonprofit’s Page On Facebook

Perhaps that was the motive for this afternoon’s chat that  Facebook’s Washington D.C. office hosted with Wendy Harman, social media director for the american red cross; Clay Dunn, online community director  from Share Our Strength, and Sarah Koch, manager of nonprofit services for Causes.
Based on the half-hour video discussion of their best practices, here are five ways to improve a nonprofit’s page on Facebook.
Educate people about the issues and your practices
Use active language to describe your organization’s activities and objectives. Quantify accomplishments: number of people helped, amount of money raised, scope of aid given. Similarly, supply statistics measuring the extent of the problems that your group is addressing or solving. The more specific you get, the better.
Have two-way conversations with fans
Encourage those who “like” your organization to post on your wall. Ask appropriate questions and create compelling content that will inspire participation. Make a point of reading others’ postings on your wall because the feedback can help you shape your group’s policy. Also, these practices have a way of growing your fan base.
Gather donations
Options for soliciting donations on Facebook continue to grow. So far, Causes has raised $30 million for nonprofits on the social network. Other charitable ventures are just beginning to make use of programs incorporating Credits into donations. These things have only just begun to get going, but already they appear cooler than going door-to-door or telemarketing. When your friends can see your altruistic inclinations, they often get inspired to follow in your footsteps. And vice versa.
Get signatures and other participation
Whether you’re trying to get lawmakers to hear your side of a story, or get your local elections officials to include your issue on a ballot, Facebook offers a highly effective way to reach large numbers of supporters quickly. The same goes for organizing rallies or protests that would occur offline. Make good use of the events feature to remind people to attend your events or show up at the polls.
Network with other nonprofits
Unlike how for-profit brands approach social media, there’s really no such thing as competitors  for non-profits — all are potential partners and role models that will likely show you everything you want to see under that proverbial kimono. Reach out to the page administrators of charities and other organizations that have goals similar to your own. Once you make that first connection, the possibilities are virtually endless. Compare notes on what you currently do, would like to do better and possibilities for collaboration.
Readers, do you agree with these five suggestions? Are there any recommendations you’d like to add? And what has your experience been with either running nonprofit pages or interacting with them as a fan?

Facebook Begins Rolling Out New Pages Design

Posted   on    December   16th, 2010 5:11 PM

The new design, which is pictured below, resembles the design of many other products including the new Facebook profile. This isn’t exactly surprising news for active page administrators, as Facebook has made it pretty well known that they would soon push out a new Page design which is consistent with the rest of the site. Overall, the design looks similar to Facebook Places, which some page administrators have already made the mistake of merging.
For those of you who haven’t merged your Facebook Page with a place yet, think twice before you do. Once you make the shift there is no turning back. While the new Pages design is not out for all users yet, we’re assuming that they will be visible to most users in the near future. We’ll reach out to Facebook to see if we can get some additional information about this change. What do you think of the new Pages design?

HUGE: Facebook Lets Page Admins Switch Between Accounts (Updated)

Facebook has rolled out a new feature along with their roll out of new Facebook Pages: the ability to switch between being logged in as the Page and as the user. This is a big change which resolves one of the biggest complaints of many page administrators.

Until now Facebook Page administrators were forced to write all posts as the administrator. However now, a user can flip between the “administrator” role and the “user” role. In other words you can take actions on behalf of the page or on behalf of yourself. This is a feature that every single administrator has wanted since the beginning of Pages. Years later, Facebook is finally rolling out some of the most needed upgrades of Facebook Pages.
From the social media marketing perspective, this is a big deal. One of the standards of practice in social media is to provide a face to a brand but Facebook never enabled that despite being the largest social media platform around. Now things have all changed. While the changes have not been pushed out to all users, we’d assume things will be pushed out to most pages over the next 24 hours or so given the number of reports we’ve received from users.
Thanks to Brian Leimone of 140ology for the tip!
Update
Facebook sales reps are actively reaching out to brands letting them know that this was just a test and that the company is “not making any changes to Pages at this time”.

Undo! Undo! Red Button Hit, Facebook Scrambles

Spokespeople for Facebook have confirmed that the site was deliberately taken down today for an unspecified period of time while staff fixed a glitch. We received an email stating:
For a brief period of time, some internal prototypes were made public to a number of people externally.  As a result, we took the site down for a few minutes.  It’s back up, and we apologize for the inconvenience.
We really admire Facebook’s integrity in responding to situations such as these — plenty of technology companies make the mistake of lying to the public or the media after an outage. It’s so much better to admit to a mistake than fudge a hacking incident that never really happened.
Apparently, the site may have had too many launches happening at the same time, as TechCrunch has reported. A new registration widget went up, some new admin page features got temporarily rolled out and then rescinded, plus a rumored “Memories” feature was temporarily made available and pulled. The latter, when it goes live, will enable people to more easily search through their histories on the site.
We scribes tend to develop B.S. detectors that refine themselves over time, so apologies if the following question sounds like it contradicts our sincere gratitude about Facebook’s honesty regarding what caused the outage.
Readers, did you really experience an outage for only a few minutes? Did you notice sluggish perfomance in the site for a longer period of time than that? Were your “like” buttons disabled for more than just a few minutes?

Carlos Tevez, Emmanuel Adebayor and Javier Hernandez top Real Madrid January transfer wish-list

Jose Mourinho wants to take Carlos Tevez, Emmanuel Adebayor or Javier Hernandez to Real Madrid in January.
Mourinho needs a striker because of a back injury which could sideline Gonzalo Higuain for up to two months.
Manchester City misfit Adebayor tops the list Mourinho gave to club president Florentino Perez and general manager Jorge Valdano on Thursday. The manager is confident he can seal a loan deal for the 26-year-old.

Loan bid: Adebayor
Unsettled: Tevez

Swap deal: Hernandez
Mourinho is a big fan of the Togolese striker and thinks he can get the best out of a player whose career at Eastlands has nosedived under Roberto Mancini. Real want to take Adebayor on loan until June 30 with the option to buy.

Another City player who could boost Real's striking options is Tevez.
Mourinho was alerted to the forward's request to leave the club earlier this week and Real are confident Valdano can persuade fellow Argentine Tevez to move to Spain rather than join Chelsea.
The asking price could be a problem, with Real determined not to pay more than 15 million euros (£12.7m) for a player they think will only decrease in value.
The most surprising name on Mourinho's list is Hernandez. The 22-year-old has made an excellent start at Old Trafford since joining in the summer from Guadalajara for £7m and has impressed Mourinho.
Although he knows it is highly unlikely that United boss Sir Alex Ferguson will let the Mexican leave, Mourinho is willing to test his resolve with a 25m euro (£21.1m) bid and even offer Lassana Diarra on top.
Fair trade: Mourinho is willing to offer cash plus Lassana Diarra in his attempt to lure Hernandez from Old Trafford

Madrid are expected to start making enquiries soon with Mourinho needing a forward urgently to try to overturn Barcelona's two-point lead in La Liga.

Lille winger Eden Hazard says he is ready to shun Real Madrid to flourish at Arsenal

Last updated at 7:34 AM on 17th December 2010
Wing sensation Eden Hazard has dropped his biggest hint so far that he wants to join Arsenal at the end of the season.
The 19-year old Belgium flyer's performances for Lille this season have made him a target for Europe's biggest clubs and even drawn praise from Zinedine Zidane, who has urged Real Madrid to snap him up.
Real look set to lose out to Arsenal, though, after Hazard praised Arsene Wenger's record for bringing through young players and revealed that he turned down the chance to join Chelsea for around £12million last June.
'I could have gone last June, but I was not ready to make that big leap,' he said.
One to watch: Arsenal have emerged as favourites to sign Eden Hazard
One to watch: Arsenal have emerged as favourites to sign Eden Hazard
'Recently the press have been writing about interest from Liverpool, and it is nice to hear your name being mentioned everywhere, especially with the best teams in the world.
'If I do leave at the end of the season, I don't want to go somewhere where I will be on the bench. I am young, not 20 until next month, and it will be difficult to break through in a team like Real, where Ronaldo and Kaka will be my competitors. But there are teams like Arsenal, where youngsters can grow more easily into the first team and make their mark.
'I will not leave for another French club, because, with more or less 100 first division matches under my belt for Lille, I don’t think I have to prove my qualities for a team in the same league. I am feeling stronger now and better equipped for the challenge of playing at a higher level.'
